Mentor and mentee

We new faculty at FSU have been assigned mentors. I could have used one last year. Now I'm pretty much an old hand at many things. However, the woman I've been assigned to, Ruth Mirtz, is someone I like. She strikes me as sort of a curmudgeonly type, but that's okay with me since I've been known to be curmudgeonly myself. I just hope that FSU's idea of mentor/mentee doesn't mean that Ruth has to review my syllabi and lesson plans. That would be a real drag. Especially for her!

I finally got busy with reviewing my text for the English 150 classes. I'd been through it several times before, but not with an eye to selecting chapters for various lessons. Once again, I am so impressed with the McGraw-Hill Writer's Guide (Roen, et al.). Much of what they've put into this text is exactly what I would have included and is done the way I would have done it.

On a different topic, I'm feeling a bit groggy today since I once again had trouble sleeping. My legs just twitch and twitter till I feel crazy! This is going to be a problem if it continues once the semester begins. Days are long when you have three classes to teach, and Thursdays will be longer, since I'll have four classes (one is a night class lasting three hours). Fortunately, staying up in Big Rapids will mean that I'm not so tired of being in my car for hours on end.

We're going to look at condos again soon. But meanwhile, we're talking about taking a trip to England next summer. Beloved spouse says it's going to cost about $10,000. We would enjoy every moment, though.
