Sleepless in the suburbs

Yawn. Last night I went to bed and fell asleep. About one a.m. or so, I heard something that woke me up. Door shutting? Cabinet door? Then my husband came to bed and said he had checked the back door to the garage and that may have been what I heard. We chatted a bit and I tried to return to sleep, but I was cold. Finally he got up and turned off the attic fan.

At 2:10 a.m., I heard a giant WHUMP against the side of the house. "What was that?" I asked. He was asleep and didn't hear it.

At 2:39 a.m., the caller ID device I have next to my side of the bed suddenly lit up, and it was like a flashlight shining in my face. Obviously not sleep-inducing. I guess it was more of the phone problems we've been having. (Those problems seem over now, judging by the two phone calls we've had so far this morning.) Fortunately, the light on the caller ID faded after a moment, but its dirty work was done.

I slept (still cold) off and on till morning. At 7:15 a.m. someone nearby honked a car horn twice. Why do people do that? Just because they have to be up and awake, everyone else has to be, too?

An airplane flew over, very close. One of the flight paths for the nearby airport is right over our house, and occasionally we get a real low-flyer. I wondered for a moment if it was going to crash through the roof.

Finally we both gave up trying to sleep around 8:15 and got up.

Now I'm in my office and the little girls next door are outside playing. The middle child is a well-known screecher. If she can't get her way or make herself understood, she screeches. I'd say "scream" but it's really a high-pitched noise that would wake the dead. I can tell that it bothers her parents, too.

All in all, I would have enjoyed having a better night's sleep, but at least there's always naptime.

Today's photo is of me, myself, and I, holding the lovely new nightgown that my mother-in-law got me. It's really pretty. It's a size medium, which I worried would not fit, but it did. I've got a picture of myself trying it on, but that's not for a public forum.
