Devastation

Massive storms swept across the Southeast, killing nearly 350 (at last count), in the second-worst series of storms in our nation's history, and what does our news media focus on? That stupid royal wedding! If ever there was proof that news coverage has hit a new low, this is it.

Carolyn lost three trees and was without power. I'm glad I sent her that Weather Radio. I hope she was able to use it to get information and to recharge her cell phone, if nothing else. (I heard this through the family grapevine.)

I finished classes this past week, except for the massive amounts of grading and the finals week submissions of revisions. My last class on Wednesday was wonderful. We watched the last part of the movie Precious, and then we had a great discussion. There were tears in the eyes of my big bad criminal justice majors. Most of them hugged me and thanked me for a great class.

Thursday night, I was the guest of Tyler Taylor, a former student, at the Honors Banquet. He had selected me as his most influential professor, a tremendous boost to my self-esteem, especially since another colleague is really hammering away at me and denouncing my evil liberal tendencies. This conservative colleague got angry with me because I had a Care Net poster removed from the women's bathroom in the Business Building. It was there without permission, but someone had written on it that it was not to be removed because it was there by permission of the Dean of Business. So I simply emailed the Dean of Business and told him about it. He had NOT authorized that poster and demanded it be removed immediately. Care Net is one of these organizations that pretends to offer full-service pregnancy counseling, but preaches gospel and lays on a guilt trip until the unfortunate young woman does what they want her to do. They make her feel as if she's shit if she wants to terminate the pregnancy. I wonder how my conservative colleague would feel if he had seen a Planned Parenthood poster? He hates PP so much, it's ridiculous. He labors under the misconception that his personal tax dollars go to support the "criminal act of abortion." They don't. But as an article that has been much-discussed on Facebook lately will attest, people who tend toward an authoritarian/conservative/Christian worldview are the least likely group of all to allow the facts to influence their opinions.

My eyes continue to give me trouble. The blurriness of the floaters, the ache in the eye socket.... Too much reading? Not enough sleep? I had another night last night in which I lay awake for 3 hours or so. Then when I finally returned to sleep, I had weird horrible dreams.

On American Idol, the contestant I liked least was finally voted off. He couldn't sing worth a damn, and his appearance was disturbing. Every time I looked at him, I couldn't help thinking he was not quite normal. He looked like a werewolf-in-training.
