The Laramie Project

I saw the play "The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later" at our Ferris auditorium this afternoon. It had a good message (a bit heavy-handed), and the delivery of the actors was good, but the direction wasn't good. Too much needless, pointless walking around on stage for virtually no reason.

I cannot imagine having a son die because he was beaten and tied to a fence to die, all because he was gay. How devastating to lose a child in any circumstances, but all the more devastating to lose a child to a hate crime. What's worse (and this was the point of the "Ten Years Later"), the city of Laramie and its citizens are now denying that his murder was a hate crime. "It was a robbery that was connected to drugs," they want to believe, even when one of the young murderers (the most aggressive one) admits he hates gays and that his initial testimony was that he struck out against Shepard because the young man "touched his genitals." Not likely. The kid who was killed is a frail thing, hardly one to be aggressive sexually.

Several students were part of this presentation. They did well.

Once again, I blame religion for its negative repressive effects on human sexuality. It frickin' does not matter if someone is gay. That person is no more likely to go to hell (because there is no hell) than the hypocrite who weekly kneels in his/her church.

Sally had called yesterday while Doug and I were out shopping. We bought a couple of fleur-de-lis planting boxes. I did not call her back because I simply have no idea what to say to her. She mentioned that she'd be home today "after church," but that's when I got in the car and headed back to Big Rapids (where I currently happen to be).

It's incredible how warm it is right now. I love it. I have gone without a coat all day today and don't want to imagine having to put one back on. Grand Rapids broke a record this afternoon and hit 85 degrees. It's about 80 here, but comfortable in the apartment. I'll likely turn on my little fan soon.

Feeling sleepy....
