It seemed clear to me that my husband did not want to spend $20,500 on a sunroom/porch. Yet he has jumped eagerly at the idea of spending $40,000 on another house up in Big Rapids. I looked at this little house alone (well, with the realtor) on Wednesday, and we're going back to look at it again, both of us, tomorrow afternoon.
There's a lot right about the little house. It has a garage with a garage-door opener, which my dear Toyota will be happy about. It's little, just right for one person with an occasional overnight guest (mostly Esteemed Spouse, but perhaps one of the female friends at work who commutes some distance to get to Big Rapids). It has an office area that is perfectly sized (9 x 10). I could have a washer and dryer, and I could even put in a dishwasher. The dining area is adorable. A big air-conditioner is installed already. There is a lot of light from the windows in most of the rooms. There is good-quality laminate flooring in the kitchen and dining room. Kitchen cabinets are newish.
The carpets, on the other hand, are incredibly filthy. They would have to go. And there is evidence of a fire in the basement; floor joists are charred. Rooms are all small. The bathroom is filthy, but seems to be intact and workable. I hope. I didn't turn on the water, but when we return tomorrow, we'll check out as much as possible. More later.
