End of Idol as we know it

After the results were announced last night on American Idol, my husband said angrily, "That's it. I'm not watching this stupid show any more." He said that last year when Adam Lambert was passed over for the bland and mediocre Kris Allen. (I can hardly ever remember his name, and the whole season, I couldn't even remember what he'd sung the time before.) Allen's first album sold only 300,000, which is kind of what I expected.

I'm trying to be philosophical, though. Crystal Bowersox will actually have a better career without trying to please the mashed-potato-without-salt-or-butter tastes of American teeny boppers. She appeals more to those of us who like Janis Joplin and Tracy Chapman, perhaps. Those of us who are still purchasing CDs, perhaps, rather than downloading music for free illegally. Or even for a few cents a pop. I don't even own an I-pod or MP3 player of any sort, mainly because I cannot bear earphones or earbuds. They hurt my ears.

I was pleased by Simon Cowell's reasonably classy farewell, but they could have left off that idiot who tried to take over the stage. I forget his name (deliberately, in this case), but he's tried out for everything, from Idol to Dance.

Actually, I think Kathy Lee Gifford would be a good Simon replacement, but that won't happen. I also think Kevin Eubanks (Leno's soon-to-depart band leader) would work in that spot, too.

People are making a big deal about Adam Lambert not being there last night, yet no one has mentioned that David Cook wasn't there. It was good to see Taylor Hicks again (I'm still a Soul Patrol supporter), and Ruben Studdard was looking good after his weight loss. I did NOT like Carrie Underwood's new song. Sorry, Kara, you don't write music that I like.

Poor pudding-faced Lee won't be any more successful than some of the others have been, but that's not even the point. I enjoy the singing during the season, and I'm really looking forward to the upcoming season of So You Think You Can Dance. I dance as well as I sing, ha ha.
