Mike (dear friend that he is!) reported that he'd had a talk with the Search Committee and said wonderful things about me, and they seemed pleased. Jackie is still waiting to be contacted. Yesterday at work, one of the senior faculty stopped to exchange brief pleasantries in the hallway and told me how much he'd enjoyed talking with me on the day of the interview.
Meanwhile, our neighbor across the street has told me that there is a position at the college where he works (only five miles from here), and that he'd put in a word for me if I wanted him to. I told him I was waiting to hear on this current situation.
After all my fussing about my beloved spouse, I have to report that yesterday, he was in the shower, and I had to flush in the other bathroom. (Believe me--I HAD to flush!) When he got out, instead of griping, he cheerfully said, "I love you too!" I apologized, but he wasn't upset or angry. He almost never is. That's one of the best things about him. He's so good-natured. And he knows my sense of humor, can finish my sentences, and appreciates most of the same things that I do. And vice-versa. Of course, I'll never have the passion for gadgets he has, and he'll never have the passion for language and art that I have, but all in all, everyone should be so lucky to have such a good match.
A couple of days ago, a local high school senior died suddenly of a blood clot. She fainted, was taken to the hospital, and died a couple of hours later of a pulmonary embolism. I am always reminded that I dodged a bullet with my own blood clot. I'll take nine days in the hospital any time over being dead. Then yesterday, my school email reported that a male student had been found dead in his dorm room. It looks like it might be drug related, sadly, but once again--life is short. Sometimes too damned short. We must live for today in many ways, because we truly have no guarantee of tomorrow. Sorry for all the cliche-speak, but it just seems right.
Meanwhile, they also serve who only stand and wait. Okay, John Donne, how long has it been since you had to wait to find out whether you had a job or not? Dr. S.
