Weekend Happiness

It's been a full week, especially given how tired we were after going to Louisiana. I waited until Tuesday morning to drive up to Big Rapids, and then all week, I worked on my conference presentation whenever I had five minutes to spare. We drove over to Detroit after I got home on Thursday and stayed in our favorite chain of hotel, Holiday Inn Express. Maybe it's just Detroit, but this hotel was not great. The coffee maker didn't work, and then when we went down to breakfast, a worker had the audacity to fuss at us for not using the tongs to get muffins. We didn't even SEE the tongs, which were placed out of the line of sight. I wanted to say something nasty, but I didn't. I understand why they don't want people pawing all over the muffins, but if they really want people to use the tongs, they should have a sign AND have the tongs easily visible.

My conference presentation went well, but the audience was only 8 people (including my own husband). Some the presentations that I sat through were NOT worth my time. Lots of graduate student stuff that revisited old issues but not in a new way. I'd never been on the Wayne State University campus before. It was okay. Not as posh as the champions of WSU would have one to believe, but okay.

Of course, now it's Saturday, and I am a complete blob of exhaustion. I may just curl up on the sofa and watch what we've got TiVoed. I need to do class prep, of course, and there are always papers to be graded, but I need to replenish my interior resources and get reacquainted with my cat. Next Friday I have to chair my WIC/WAC committee for the first time. Tuesday night I have a supper to go to, hosted by the mentors for as-yet-untenured faculty. Betty wants me to go to supper with her on April 1 at the only French restaurant in Big Rapids. (Let's hope it surpasses the usual Big Rapids restaurant quality.)

It's cold this morning. In fact, a light snow was falling when I got up at 8:30. So much for Spring having Sprung. Spring never springs here in Michigan. It sneaks in and out so fast that if you blink, you miss it. And it doesn't even do that until April, maybe May. It's easy to see why a couple of my colleagues at Ferris have just taken jobs in the South. One is going to Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi (yeah, Faulkner!), and another is going to Texas Women's in Denton, Texas. As I sit and wait for warm, pleasant weather to arrive, I can't help being jealous of them.

My older son will call shortly, so I'd better grab some lunch while I can. Big Son likes to talk for an hour or more, and I'm already hungry.

Dear Sharon,
My name is Tom. I am a college student from Taiwan, which is a little island next to mainland China. I have been interested in learning English. However, English Writing has been the most difficult part of learning English for most students in Taiwan. I am also one of them. I study very hard every day, but when speaking of writing a short essay and story about my winter vacation or even translating a sentence, I need to spend lots of time, and I do it poorly. Therefore, I hope you could help me solve this difficulty. Thank you
