Home again

We got back about 9:30 last night and were pleased to be home. The flight down to Louisiana was horrible. My husband's cell phone rang at 3 a.m. that morning. We just assumed it was a wrong number, so my husband turned off the cell phone. The alarm was set for 5 a.m., so I got up and began making coffee. My husband checked to see if a message had been left on the cell. There was one, from the airline. Our flight from Grand Rapids to Memphis had been delayed from 7:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., which meant we would be unable to catch the early connecting flight from Memphis to Monroe. We didn't get out of Memphis and into Monroe until 4:15 p.m., which effectively cost us a half day of visiting. I can think of much more enjoyable ways to spend five hours than spending them in the Memphis airport. Snore. We were both exhausted anyway from our lack of sleep.

When we left Grand Rapids, it was snowing. When we arrived in Memphis, it was sleeting, but that changed to rain. Monroe, LA, was cold and rainy. It rained the entire time we were there. Our trip to see Carolyn was dreary in the nonstop downpour, and her little house didn't help. It was cold and dank and miserable, but it was good to see her. She's doing reasonably well following her mother's death. Still, our four-hour visit with her was paired with five hours driving there and back in the rain, so I don't think we'll do that again soon.

The next day we drove to Jena to see my relatives. Everyone seemed okay except for Amber. She's been diagnosed with scoliosis of her spine in two places, and she can't sit upright. She leans to the side really badly, and of course that makes her neck hurt. She coughs a lot because of it. She's wearing a back brace now, but it doesn't seem to do much good.

On Sunday we shared a lunch of Johnny's pizza (our hometown favorite) with my husband's brothers and their wives. Then his younger brother drove us to the airport. Our flight home was pleasant, uneventful, even beautiful. We got back to reasonably comfortable temperatures, with no precipitation. Today is also quite temperate, but snow is in the forecast for week's end. I have that conference at Wayne State this Friday, so I'm hoping we don't have bad weather to travel in.

I am so ready for good weather. This morning I walked around outside the house to check on everything, and the little Japanese magnolia has fuzzy green buds on it. Poor thing. There will be many more freezes before actual Spring arrives here. It doesn't matter what the calendar says. Spring can be officially here this coming Friday morning at 7:44 a.m., but it won't be actually here until the temperatures get above and stay above freezing. That's at least a month from now, if not two months.

I will no doubt write more, but as I'd expected, I'm incredibly tired from our whirlwind trip. And there is much to do before I head back to Big Rapids. Wouldn't it be lovely to have another spring break to recuperate from this one?
