Earthquakes and other oddities

Our local news is agog with coverage of the earthquake in Southern California, even though there was apparently little damage and no injuries or deaths. I suppose I ought to be more interested in the story, given that my husband will be in Southern California on August 7, staying for several days. Earthquakes tend to come in clusters, it seems, and I'd hate for the poor man to have to undergo an earthshattering experience without me by his side! (All puns intended.)

My thoughts have been consumed today with my older son and his exam today and tomorrow. He has expressed to us that he doesn't know if he could put himself back through the ordeal of taking it again if he doesn't pass. Naturally I want him to pass it the first time since after everything I went through with my dissertation, which was so abysmally ego-destroying, I can really understand how he feels. I'll just be happy for him to have it over with, but he won't be truly happy until he gets a job and gets word that he's passed the exam.

I saw something quite strange today. I was turning onto 44th Street from my subdivision, and across the street, I saw a red car being driven down the sidewalk, as if the sidewalk were another lane of 44th Street. The driver was a white-haired man, so I couldn't help but wonder whether the man was okay. Perhaps Alzheimer's? I halfway expected to hear something about it on the evening local news, but the earthquake has dominated the coverage and likely knocked off any odd local stories. Of course, there is the exception: continuing coverage of the enraged boyfriend who assaulted his girlfriend by throwing her pregnant chihuahua at her. Both she and the poor dog were injured. The man has been charged with assaulting the girlfriend and with cruelty to animals. I am happy to report that the fool boyfriend was also charged with resisting arrest and got himself tasered for his trouble.

Esteemed Spouse has begun his rumbling for a new television. I don't see the point. I'm about to be gone during the middle of the week. Neither of us will be home to watch tv together on Monday night; he'll be alone on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Surely he doesn't expect tv-watching marathons all day on Friday and Saturday? After all, he'll have to have time to watch all the golf, baseball, and football that gets aired. Sigh. I suppose I should be grateful he has yet to succumb to the allure of hockey and lacrosse.

I'm sleepy. I missed my afternoon nap, and after all, that is the point of summer--to sleep as much as possible. I need it especially because some fine soul dialed my number at 6:15 this morning, let the phone ring once, and then hung up. It took me an hour to fall back asleep, and then I slept too late. Now I feel discumbobulated. S.

I'm just trying out the comments feature for the first time. A new TV? Poor Doug would be horrified to know that Pam and I still are using the same 19" television that we bought in 1992 in Idaho, moved to Missouri, and then to Texas. It still works and we are too cheap to get anything new until it breaks. We have an even smaller one in the bedroom that Pam's parents' bought her when she graduated from college in 1986! I guess we have good luck with TVs lasting forever, but at this rate we may never get to join the 21st century.
