Earring fix and miscellaneous

Today we took my black pearl earrings to a jeweler to have French hooks put on in place of the lever backs. It will take a week, since they have to order the hooks. The cost is minimal, just $45, but still, I know my dear spouse has already paid a lot for those earrings. I'll have to wear them several times a month just so he'll know how much I appreciate them. They really are beautiful, and I'll feel like a queen when I have them on.

On a different topic: Lately the news has been full of sex crimes. A local used-car salesman has been groping female customers when they are test-driving cars. A local probation officer has been soliciting sexual favors from his female ex-convict clients. A teenager was arrested for groping a nine-year-old girl at a local swimming pool. I just don't understand people like these. What in the world are these guys thinking? Do they honestly think they can get away with it? Or is the urge too strong to resist? I've always believed it was just a lie that men "can't control themselves" when the urge came upon them. It's just a way to blame women for inciting men's desires, when in reality, I suspect it's more about power than about sex. Still, some local idiot woman wrote a letter to the editor, blaming women's revealing clothing for men's outrageous sexual actions. Her "logic" is that men just can't help themselves when they see all that flesh. Gee, I can't help wondering why the rates of sexual abuse and rape aren't much, much higher in cultures that wear very few clothes, compared to the heavily clothed cultures. If this woman's "logic" had merit, then the Inuits would have the lowest rate of sex crimes of any culture.

South Texas was bombarded by Hurricane Dolly today. South Padre Island, a popular vacation spot, had quite a bit of damage, according to the news. I always worry about my friends and family who live in that area of Texas when hurricanes come ashore there.

We bought a few more hanging baskets to replace the half-dead ones we'd hung just a month or so ago. The aquaglobes we'd gotten just don't work very well. And they're heck to fill with water. So we've gone back to the usual hose and watering can. I'll have to figure out some art project to do with the aquaglobes.

I'm doing okay with my bicycle. I rode a mile yesterday and a mile today, increasing the resistance. My legs quiver even with that short distance, but surely I'll develop more stamina over time.

Today is my daughter-in-law Wendy's birthday. We called to say Happy Birthday. She was at her mother's, so she hasn't gotten our gift yet. I'm eager to hear from her once she finds out the fun stuff I collected for her. Wish I could be there to see her face.

It's late, so I'm off to bed. S.
