Amendment to birthday whine
My brother Curtis did call me on my birthday. We had a great conversation for nearly an hour. I forget how much I enjoy talking to him. Of course, we don't get into anything serious, mostly just talking about work, the blackberries he was picking, etc. But at least he cared and remembered.
As for Ellie, I got a card from her yesterday. She, her husband, and her son signed their names. No "love" or any sort of note. The card was rather business-like, just the number 60 on the front. I know how busy she is, and I know she feels personally affronted by my nontheism. I wish she would not, but that can't be helped. I spent nearly 6 decades pretending to have religious feelings I did not have, and one thing age has given me is the courage to say, "I don't believe in the Santa-Claus-for-Adults mythology. It's foolish, and it's always been foolish. Religion truly IS the opiate of the masses, and I choose to look at the world realistically."
As he did yesterday, my Esteemed Spouse is playing golf. We are in the middle of the worst heat wave we've had since we moved to Michigan ten years ago. Gee. One-sixth of my life has now been spent in this state, and I still don't feel like I belong here, even though I've made some good friends. Not the kinds of friends who visit me or call to chat, though. I guess those days are gone for good. I'm too antisocial, perhaps.
Today is Amber's 19th birthday. I sent her two books: a history and a geography of the Bible. If she's going to be religious, the least she needs to do is to learn more than whatever her idiot preachers tell her.
It's also Sylvia's birthday. And it would have been my Papaw Cater's birthday.
I don't feel very well. In fact, I haven't felt especially well for days now. On the way down to Fayetteville, I threw up in the car. While at Stephen's, I had an episode that was partly heat exhaustion and partly intestinal distress. And now I'm sitting here feeling weak and shaky. My heart seems to be pounding. I hope I don't have another bout with low potassium.
