And so it goes....

I'm back at school for the six-week summer session, which starts tomorrow. I'm ready, except that I seem to have both copies of the 11th edition of the textbook I'm using for the online class at home rather than at school. I decided not to use a text for the six-week summer session face-to-face class. It meets four days a week, for 1 hour 35 minutes a day. We're going to be moving FAST, so I decided that it might be fun to do without a textbook. Last time I barely used the book, so there seemed to be little reason to have them purchase it.

It rained all day yesterday so I waited until today to drive back. Esteemed Spouse was golfing after neither of us slept much last night. I awoke at 3 a.m. and did not return to sleep until 7 a.m., when I slept for another 50 minutes. I just woke up from a deep nap that lasted for an hour or more. (I don't recall exactly when I fell asleep.) So of course I'll have trouble sleeping tonight. Oh, well. My students say I'm funnier when I'm a walking zombie from lack of sleep.

My online class has only 14 students in it. For that, I am thankful. My FTF class has 23, but two won't be there. One student is doing Study Abroad, and another student (a young man I've taught before) is enrolled in another class at the same time, so these two are going to treat the class as an online class. The Study Abroad person will return by month's end, so she will be there most of the time. I have a student who wants to add the class, but I was in my office for about 3 hours this afternoon and did not see her, so I'm not going to be too worried about her.

Yet another runner in our local marathon keeled over and died before finishing the race. He was a former athlete (Hall of Famer) for Grand Valley. Sorry, folks, but it seems pretty logical to me that running for 26 miles is going to kill you. Why do it? Geez, if you have that damned much energy, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. So many people who work out obsessively are such incredible narcissists. And, I have to say, I have a colleague who works out a lot and runs and swims, and I doubt I've known a more vain person. This person even has as his profile photo a half-naked muscle shot. He's older than I am. Yeah, he looks good for his age, but my skin crawls at his vanity photo.
