Last night my husband and I joined some members of his department for a couple of games of bowling and then dinner out. It had been years (decades!) since I had bowled, but I rented a pair of shoes and had at it. I actually beat the other two women on the second game, but then, I did take bowling in both high school and college. I know how to bowl, but it wasn't easy to regain my "form" (such as it used to be), mainly because the new bowling shoes won't let players slide. So I was forced to walk up and swing rather than slide into the swing. It was hard to find a ball that fit properly. Two of the ones I tried had rough places where the thumb hole was. And I certainly didn't bowl as well as I used to. My best score was a mere 100. Still, I think with practice, I could improve. Maybe for Mother's Day, I need my own ball and shoes.
Today, though, I admit that I'm feeling the strain of seldom-used muscles. It hurts every time I get up out of my recliner!
My Faculty Colloquium was a success that has me still smiling. I was especially pleased by one colleague who asked me for a copy of my PowerPoint. She has taken a job in Missouri at Maryville (?) and will be teaching detective fiction, and she said she realized how much she didn't know after seeing my presentation. I do love that genre. And I do want to get back to writing detective fiction. Last night I reread a couple of things I've written in the past and surprised myself with how it didn't suck as badly as I expected it to suck. :-)
Watching the senior English majors give their capstone presentations Thursday evening was a big disappointment. Clearly, these young people had no clue how to give an oral presentation. Maybe I should help get them ready next year. I could forgive the young man who has some sort of tic (Tourette's Syndrome?), but there was no reason the other three people did so poorly.
I have a roast in the oven and need to peel and cut up potatoes, so adieu.
