Language

I have noticed a strong tendency for gendered and sexually oriented language to dominate the arguments of those who are, shall we say, "less mature." Here's a poster that exemplifies how I personally feel:

I had a discussion on Facebook and discovered that most women who are older really hate c**t. I've been complaining about the way some of the sites I used to like are using that word to refer to anyone, male or female, whom they don't like. I also complained to a "secret group" that I'd been invited to join that using the f**k word as all 8 parts of speech lowered the level of dialogue. People blasted me and called me "condescending." Sigh. It's condescending to object to vulgar language now? Must we all lower ourselves to the bottom in order to be allowed to speak?

What bothers me about so much of this language is that women's genitalia are being used as curse words. Yes, of course, people also use "dick" as a curse word, but the greatest insult of all is to refer to a male by a female body part. That demeans women, and that is not a desirable state of affairs. Can we complain about how women are treated in the job market if we complacently accept being demeaned in people's everyday language?

I say no, and in addition to my campaigns to avoid homophobic, racist, and sexist language, I will continue to complain about calling someone "gay" or "retard" or "n****r"--and I will definitely object to c**t and p***y and other such words.
