How nice it is to sleep in my own air-conditioned bedroom. This past week has been so hot. I slept ON TOP of the covers at the apartment, with two fans on high speed.
My bedroom at home is possibly about to get even more air-conditioned. We're looking at one of those supplemental systems that installs in the wall. Our bedroom is the hottest and muggiest room in the house, and every summer we suffer. We set up a wild system of floor fans to try to move the cooler air up from the basement, but it doesn't work very well. On Monday someone is coming out to talk to my husband about installing the unit. Knowing my Esteemed Spouse, who vacillates between being unable to resist spending money and unable to make himself spend money (witness the lack of a new patio door, despite how badly we need one), who knows what will happen? However, he won't hesitate to spend money on anything and everything computer or media related. Sigh. We all have our priorities.
The summer classes are going pretty well. I have some wonderful students in both of them. The six-week class is about to hit high gear for the remaining 2 1/2 weeks left of it.
My husband will be heading to Louisiana to visit his mother week after next. Sigh. I just don't have much interest in going to Louisiana these days. Such a long drive (he's flying this time), so hot and humid when we get there, so many relatives that I just don't have any interest in spending time with. My husband's sister-in-law thinks she knows everything about health, yet she is a staunch admirer of this vitamin quack online, Joseph Mercola. Even Skeptic's Dictionary lists this guy under their Junk Science/Pseudoscience department. I've been anticipating getting into a major argument with her for years now. And everybody is so thick-headed religious. Used to, I would bow my head and suffer through the prayers said at meals, but now, I don't want to endure that any longer. I'm afraid that I'll be tempted to say, "Abracadabra, please and thank you."
And of course, I have gotten NO thank-you of any sort for the graduation gifts I sent Amber, nor do I expect to. I imagine as her birthday nears, I'll start getting phone calls again, but that's how my family works. They don't have any interest in communicating with me unless it's a gift-giving (or money-"borrowing") occasion. What a lovely family. Like Sarah Palin, so many of them are stupid and proud of it. ("borrowing" in quotation marks because none of them ever pays me back. Well, Sally has paid back some of it, maybe 1/10 of what I've given her under the label "lending" so her house could be saved from foreclosure, she could repair whatever junker car they're driving, she could buy medications, etc.)
We're still discussing going to Washington, D.C. to celebrate my 60th birthday. It's hard to believe that I'll be 60 in just 5 1/2 weeks. We also want to see our sons and daughter-in-law and to meet Stephen's and Heather's new kitty, once they ever get him.
My neighbor finally installed an underdeck system so that his kids could play on the patio even when it is raining. They have a walkout basement, which we do not have, so it would not be needed for us. We did finally finish the lattice, and now we need to get more landscaping done.
