In the immortal words of Jay Leno to that actor caught with a prostitute: "What were you thinking???!!!" That's how I feel about the Republican/Tea Party victories yesterday. Only one of my candidates was elected. We now have this "businessman" Rick Snyder as our governor-elect. He promises to put EVERYTHING (including education) on the business model. Oh, yeah, that'll work. My students already think they "deserve" a good grade simply because they paid their tuition. I think I'll keep a scrapbook of the negative changes that will occur while this man is governor.
I actually got into a Facebook altercation with a former student (one who I know already to be somewhat reactionary and often irrational). She was posting things about our outgoing governor Jennifer Granholm that were rude and stupid, like "Goodbye, Bitch. Don't let the doorknob hit you in the ass on the way out the door." I challenged her to provide evidence of Granholm's incompetency, and of course, she couldn't. All she could do was spout more emotional crap, using the "f" word several times. Not at me, but about Granholm. I told her that she lost the argument simply because she resorted to vulgarities when logic was asked for. I don't think she appreciated that. No doubt she thinks I'm just as bad as Granholm. I'd actually be honored to be in the governor's company.
I ranted at my students yesterday, but of course, my words won't make any difference since I am only one voice in a cacophony of soundbytes and bumper stickers that spout irrational sentiments. In fact, they were promised that if I heard the phrase "tax-and-spend liberal" one more time, I'd projectile vomit. I explained why paying taxes was a good thing, not a bad one.
Guess I'd better get ready to go to work.
