Week 2 ends

I found out that the fire in Apt. 5 was started by the tenant herself. She had placed a book on the lit gas stove, piled a bunch of clothing in the middle of the floor and lit it, and set her mattress on fire. From what the maintenance man told me (he's a great source of gossip), she was not a student but a mentally ill person who was being subsidized by the state. I don't harbor a grudge against her, but I do find myself terrified at the idea that my life, and the lives of the other tenants in this apartment building, were so easily jeopardized.

Classes went well this week, but I have a lot of grading to do, as usual. I'm trying very hard to keep up with the work, and so far, I'm doing pretty well. Still, I allowed myself the luxury of sleeping late this morning and spending a little time catching up on email and Facebook, and of course, updating my blog.

My eyes are causing me a lot of trouble this morning. They're burning and itchy and teary. Too much reading? Sigh. I love to read. I could not bear it if I could not read.

Stephen and Heather will have to pick up their new kitten earlier than expected because of some trip the breeder wants to take. I can hardly wait to see photos.

I'm hungry, so I suppose I ought to get off the computer long enough to scrounge up some breakfast. Let's hope I don't burn the bagel this morning the way I did a couple of days ago. I invented a new flavor of bagel: charcoal. Fortunately, the smoke alarm didn't go off. I'm not sure my fellow tenants would have been happy about that, after what we've been through this week.

Oh, I forgot to mention that when I got back to the apartment on Wednesday, the maintenance truck was parked in my spot, so I parked in #5's spot (she won't be needing it, right?). He asked me if I wanted to have that spot permanently, so I said yes. Now I can see my car from the little porch, and it's not under that tree with all the bird poop and fallen leaves. My car and I thank you, Mr. Maintenance Man.

Now, to address hunger...
